- DIED. Bill Terry, 90, first baseman and manager of the old
- New York Giants, who compiled a lifetime batting average of
- .341 and was the last National League player to hit above .400
- in a season (.401 in 1930); in Jacksonville. A left-handed
- hitter who rarely struck out, Terry spent his major-league
- playing career (1923-36) with the Giants. As manager, he won
- three pennants and one World Series title (1933).
